A non-surgical procedure designed to destroy fat cells; fat freezing has accumulated quite a cult following over the past few years. As one of the hottest treatments around, here are Lux Medical Aesthetic Clinic‘s top five things you need to know about fat freezing before you take the plunge.

 1. How does it work?

Fat freezing works by using cutting-edge technology to literally freeze unwanted fat. The theory behind it is that fat cells die at extremely cold temperatures. Many people will turn to fat freezing to help rid the body of stubborn fat that simply won’t shift despite a healthy diet and exercise.

During the treatment, an applicator is applied to the surface of the skin and a vacuum-like suction occurs. While it probably feels quite strange, it doesn’t hurt. The coldness will make the area go numb after a few minutes.

2. Should we believe the hype?

While results can vary from person to person, it’s well worth believing the hype. Research has shown that fat reduction following one session can be as high as 25%. Importantly though, fat freezing may not reflect on your scales, especially if you are overweight.

3. Are results permanent?

The short answer to this is yes, the fat cells that are targeted are permanently destroyed. However, as mentioned earlier, the treatment will not help you lose weight. That’s up to you. While the fat will disappear, if you put weight back on, the fat does have to go somewhere. In short, the results are permanent if you control your weight.

Rather than helping you lose weight, fat freezing will help you with specific areas where fat is an issue. Many patients will use fat freezing to help with waistline issues including bulges over pants or as a result of pregnancy, love handles, thighs and arms.

4. Will you see results straight away?

In short, no. Results do not occur straight away. Generally speaking, it takes between 12 and 16 weeks for the body to fully process and dispose of the fat that has been targeted.

What you will see straight away, though, is a slight reddening of the skin, a tingling sensation and slight swelling. Of course, this will depend on the individual. There is also the possibility of bruising or aching.

5. Are there exemptions from using fat freezing technology?

As with anything medical, there will be some situations where it’s not recommended to use certain technologies. In the case of fat freezing, there are some instances where it is not possible to have the procedure done. It’s always wise to speak to a medical professional if you are concerned but generally, those with the following cannot have fat freezing done:

  • pacemakers or heart valve replacements
  • heart, liver or kidney disease
  • arterial disease
  • autoimmune conditions
  • metal implants in the preferred targeted area
  • those who experience keloid scarring in the treatment area
  • epilepsy
  • cancer
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding

At the end of the day, while fat freezing may not help the scales, it will help your waistline or your problem areas and is especially worthwhile if these areas are of concern to you.
